American fantasy action movie 47 Ronin was released in 2013 under the direction of Carl Rinsch. The film is a work of Chshingura (“The Treasury of Loyal Retainers”), a fictionalized account of the forty-seven rnin, a real-life group of masterless samurai under daimy Asano Naganori in 18th-century Japan who avenged Naganori’s death by fighting his rival Kira Yoshinaka.
The story was conceived by Morgan and Walter Hamada. In contrast to earlier adaptations, this one, starring Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ko Shibasaki, pays little homage to the source material and instead presents a stylised rendition set “in a world of witches and giants.”
47 Ronin was created by H2F Entertainment, Mid Atlantic Films, Moving Picture Company, Stuber Productions, Relativity Media, and premiered in Japan on December 6, 2013, before receiving a simultaneous 2D and 3D theatrical release in the US on December 50, 2013.
47 Ronin was one of the worst box office failures in history when it was released, garnering largely unfavorable reviews from critics and grossing just $151 million against its $175-250 million production budget, putting Universal in the deficit for 2013.[5] One of “Hollywood’s biggest box office bombs of 2013” according to Variety was 47 Ronin.
