In 2017, Guy Ritchie directed the epic fantasy action-adventure film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which he also co-wrote with Joby Harold and Lionel Wigram based on an Arthurian legends-inspired plot by Harold and David Dobkin. In addition to Jude Law playing the oppressive king Vortigern who is attempting to kill Charlie Hunnam, the movie also stars Strid Bergès-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, and Eric Bana in supporting parts.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword had its world debut on May 8 at the TCL Chinese Theater before going on general distribution on May 12 in the US and May 19 in the UK. Despite having a $175 million production budget, the movie made $148 million globally. The movie was supposed to be the first in a six-film series, but after it underwhelmed at the box office and cost Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures over $150 million, the planned sequels were scrapped.
