The 2022 American superhero movie Morbius, based on the Morbius, the Living Vampire comic book character, was created by Columbia Pictures in collaboration with Marvel. It is the third movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), which is distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. Jared Leto plays Dr. Michael Morbius in the film, which is directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson also appear. In the movie, after healing themselves of a rare blood ailment, Morbius and his adopted brother Milo turn into living vampires.
Since 1998, there have been numerous attempts to bring Morbius to the big screen, but none of them have been successful. These attempts include joining the Blade franchise and having a solo movie made by Artisan Entertainment. Sony started making a movie based on Morbius after unveiling plans for a new shared world of Spider-Man character-inspired movies that would debut with Venom (2018). By November 2017, Sazama and Sharpless had finished writing the script, and Leto and Espinosa began working on it formally in June 2018. Additional casting for the movie started at the end of the year in preparation for the commencement of filming in London in February 2019. Retakes were scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in February 2020 after it was verified that filming was finished by June 2019.
