Instead of X-wings, Universal has occasionally flying automobiles. They have street racers from Los Angeles who steal VCRs and nuclear submarines instead of superheroes. The Fast and Furious franchise’s open and expanding embracing of absurd mayhem has been a delight given how many filmmakers in recent years have adopted the po-faced, gritty approach to maintaining old favorite characters and series alive. F9 from 2021 accomplished a number of crazy action scenes using the power of magnets.
It sent a Pontiac carrying Tyrese and Ludacris into orbit. With a straight face, it informed us that John Cena was Vin Diesel’s sibling, and we took it at its value. Or, at the very least, those of us who were prepared to suspend enough of our skepticism to accompany the crazy journey. But it turns out that you can only get so far without touching grass in that kind of insanity.
The raucous Fast X, the huge and overcrowded first installment of a planned multi-part conclusion, replaces the roaring exhilaration of F9 and stuffs a potato in the series’ exhaust pipe. It is almost entirely saved by Jason Momoa’s deeply bizarre and quite hilarious portrayal as the villain.
