An abandoned train station is referred to as a “ghost station” if revenue-service passenger trains, particularly rapid transit trains, pass through it but do not stop. The phrase is also occasionally used to refer to any abandoned station, whether it is a train station or an underground one. The phrase “ghost station” originates from Germany, where it refers to a station that was created as part of another project, or “Bauvorleistung” (roughly: building pre-effort). The term “ghost stations” is sometimes used in English-language periodicals to describe “pre-built” stations or portions of them that have not yet entered service.
