RAMYUG 2021 review

Kunal Kohli’s modern retelling of the story of Ramayana, “Ramyug” strikes a fascinating balance between the old world charm and contemporary nuances. The show succeeds in transporting us to a world of crystal blue waterfalls, kingdoms and mythical beings where slow moving arrows and melodious music prevails. Well, at least for the first few episodes, after which the show picks pace and ardour along with phenomenal VFX – we’d say it packs a well-rounded punch!

This 8-episodic series takes us through all the major events of Ayodhya’s crown prince – Rama’s life. The pilot episode about Sita’s swayamvar in Mithila is shot beautifully – the bond between Rama (played by Diganth Manchale) and Sita (played by Aishwarya Ojha) is impeccable from the word go.

The following episodes take us through various heart-pounding events – Sita’s abduction from the hut, the vaanar sena building the Ram Setu from ground up, the mighty Hanuman setting Lanka ablaze, and everything in between.

Here’s the thing – we’re not new to the events of the Ramyana – what then justifies the success of a remake? I’d say, it’s the show’s power to induce nostalgia. Kunal Kohli’s “Ramyug” packs a modern narrative, but also makes us nostalgic simultaneously. Watching “Ramyug” will take you back to your childhood days – grandma’s midnight stories, performing the Ramayana at the annual function and more.
