Henri-Georges Clouzot is the director and co-writer of the 1953 thriller film The Wages of Fear (French: Le Salaire de la peur[a]), which starred Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter van Eyck, and Véra Clouzot. In the movie, a gang of four destitute European men are hired by an American oil corporation to operate two trucks across dirt roads in the mountains while carrying nitroglycerine, which is needed to put out an oil well fire. It is based on a French novel by Georges Arnaud from 19100.
After winning the Palme d’Or and the Golden Bear at the 1953 and 1955 Berlin and Cannes film festivals, respectively, the movie catapulted Clouzot to international renown and gave him the opportunity to helm Les Diaboliques. With almost 7 million tickets sold, it was the fourth highest-grossing movie in France this year.
