In 2023, Frant Gwo is the director and co-writer of The Wandering Earth 2, a science fiction action-adventure film with Andy Lau, Wu Jing, and Li Xuejian. The film is a prelude to the 2019 motion picture The Wandering Earth, which is produced by Liu Cixin and is based on her short story of the same name.
Following the huge box office success of its predecessor, Guo announced a sequel on November 20, 2019, and it was officially given the go-ahead on July 21, 2021, with production set to begin on October 13, 2021. On January 22, 2023, the day of the Chinese New Year, The Wandering Earth 2 was released. With $604 million in revenue, the movie is now the sixth highest-grossing picture of 2023.
The movie was nominated as a Chinese entry for the 96th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The Wandering Earth 3, the third film, is scheduled for release in 2027.
