Jammu and Kashmir, an area in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent and a portion of the wider region of Kashmir that has been the focus of a conflict between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947, was granted special status by Article 370 of the Indian constitution. From 17 November 1952 to 31 October 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was governed by India as a state, and Article 370 granted it the authority to have an independent constitution, a state flag, and internal administrative autonomy.
