Leigh Whannell and Darren Lynn Bousman co-wrote the script for the 2005 horror movie Saw II. It is the follow-up to Saw from 2004 and the second movie in the Saw franchise. Franky G, Glenn Plummer, Beverley Mitchell, Dina Meyer, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Erik Knudsen, Shawnee Smith, and Tobin Bell are among the cast members of the movie alongside Donnie Wahlberg. The Jigsaw Killer imprisons a group of ex-convicts within a house, where they must endure a series of lethal tests to find the antidote to a nerve toxin that would kill them in two hours.
Saw’s 2004 opening weekend was a hit, and a sequel was quickly approved. Whannell and James Wan were unable to script or direct because they were too preoccupied with making their next movie. Before Saw was released, Bousman wrote a script titled The Desperate and tried to find a producer for it, but numerous studios turned it down. After receiving the script, Gregg Hoffman showed it to his colleagues Mark Burg and Oren Koules. It was thought that Saw II could be created with a few adjustments. Whannell became available to offer script revisions. The movie had a bigger budget and was filmed in Toronto from May to June 2005.
