Universal Pictures released the sequel to The Mummy, which came out in 1999.
The Scorpion King, a 2002 prequel movie that is set 5,000 years before The Mummy Returns and whose namesake character, played by Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), was first presented in this movie, was inspired by The Mummy Returns. Despite receiving mixed reviews, The Mummy Returns was a commercial success.
